REAL WEDDING: Ben and Genna
Ben and Genna’s wedding was nothing short than fun, beautiful, romantic and touching. Their friends were legends who have stood by them throughout the years and love was celebrated with good laughter and great wine. Read all about it here as Genna recounts her wedding.
Tell me about the proposal… We were in Perth for Ben’s cousin’s wedding and we snuck down to Margaret River for a few days prior. We hadn’t booked anything for accomodation but unbeknownst to me, Ben had everything figured out. We arrived at a gorgeous rammed earth cottage in the middle of the bush with an open fire (and kangaroos hopping past the windows) and I knew something was up. He said he had booked lunch and we were soon on our way the the beautiful Voyager Estate winery. When strolling through the rose garden, I turned to see him on his knee and nervously asking me the big question. I of course said yes, laughed and asked if we were still having lunch. The response was ‘a degustation’. He had thought of everything!
What was the first thing you decided on when you were arranging your day? We definitely wanted to get married at a winery! Being pretty keen on wine and the beauty of most Victorian wineries, this was a no-brainer. Pretty quickly we knew that Brown Brothers was the place for us. It was one of the first wineries we visited together when I took Ben up to Bright in the early days and the barn renovation looked incredible. When we visited it we fell in love with the oak trees and knew it was for us.We started with our ‘non-negotiables’. We made sure we communicated what were the biggest things that would impact our day and the most important things that we wanted included. We did so much planning together and made sure that we divided the tasks. A friend gave us the idea of using a KANBAN wall (Google it if you don’t know) with sticky notes and I’m very visual so this was one of the best things for us. We’re so happy with how everything fell into place and I think the forethought was very crucial to the smooth running of the day.
What was the best piece of advice you were given in the lead up? Definitely to savour every moment. Both Ben and the Groomsmen, and I and my Bridesmaids did some quick mindfulness meditation while getting ready. It was funny because neither of us had spoken about it but felt like it was exactly what we needed! We both felt really able to soak in all the awesomeness and leave the stress of planning behind!
The best thing about our wedding day was…the gorgeous sunny day that Milawa gave us! So many things came into play when thinking about the best parts of our day, our stunning flowers, the crew at Brown Brothers, our fabulous celebrant, the last minute touches and our incredible team of family and friends all ensured that we had the most special day ever! Our hearts were, and still are, very full!
The funniest part of our day was…all the impromptu fun bits our friends and family did naturally! This included a huge mexican wave, invisible skipping rope and dance-offs - which were all hilarious!
The best piece of advice you could give someone else getting married? Would be to try to relax and enjoy the small moments. Remember why you are celebrating this special day and enjoy it for all it's mishaps and successes! Also, a little meditation or massage before the day is sure to calm to nerves. Indulge!
We we’re glad we...booked our wedding on a long weekend! Definitely having everyone up in the country for a few days surrounding the weekend was one of the best decisions we made! It ensured a super relaxed time at the wedding and some fun time either side where everyone could explore the beauty of Beechworth.
Tell me about the cake. We loved the idea of having a smaller cake to cut and then doughnuts...because who doesn’t love a doughnut on the d-floor? We adore the gorgeous food from Saint Monday in Yakandandah so we quickly chose them to help us with the cardamom and honey cake (drool). Next was a hunt for where to get doughnuts that would fit the ‘look’. So we got in touch with Beechworth Bakery and with the help of some Pinterest inspo they made a mix of iced, coconut-ed and sprinkled white doughnuts. My sister-in-law and my brother were in charge of putting everything altogether and they did an awesome job foraging leaves, using flowers to decorate and even sanding down a tall log for a cake tower!
Who was your favourite stand out vendor? Moonglow, our jazz band were incredible. They absolutely brought all the good vibes and had everyone smiling and dancing. The switch to their DJ set was flawless and had the entire wedding glued to the dance floor until the buses arrived!
